Heat meter replacement on commercial RHI biomass heating installation

The heat meters need to be replaced after the end of their lifespan or after 10 years of operation even if their lifespan is longer.
On RHI accredited installations the replacement must be done by an MCS certified installer company, like ours.

The procedure is the following:

Preparations

The repacement meter need to be purchased.
The new meter need to have valid calibration certificate.
The easiest way is to buy one identical to the original meter.
If you are not 100% sure which model to buy, send us some photos of the old meter and we help you to identify your meter.
Please inform us that it is battery powered or connected to the mains supply.

Replacement

The replacement job is relatively easy, but the flow meter need to be drained.
If the flow meter can be isolated from the sytem with valves on both sides, draining is easy.
If there are no valves on one or both sides of the flow meter, than the whole system may need to be drained, depending on system layout.

Paperwork

Please remember you have an ongoing obligation to notify Ofgem within 28 days of any changes to your application, i.e replacing the meter.

The detailed requirements can be found here:

You will need to provide information of the following:

In addition you will need to keep the calibration certificate of the new (and also the old) meter.

In case you require updated schematics of the installation, you can order it from us together with the replacement of meter. I can make it for you, but I need to asess the installation at the time of replacement. If you can give me the old schematics, that could help a lot. If you order the schematics afterwards, we need to arrange a new appointment and you may run out of 28 days deadline.

Prices

The cost consists of two parts, meter, and labour. If you are VAT registered, I recommend that you buy the meter yourself. If you wish, I send you the link from where we would order the meter.
If you want me to buy the meter for you, I put 5% surcharge on it, but before ordering I ask for your confirmation.
The labour and the mileage together would be £190 if you are within 40 miles from Knaresborough and the job could be completed in two hours. Additional hours would be charged with £28 hourly rate, additional miles with 49p rate. These prices are valid if you order the job in 2026.
We are not VAT registered.
